Description:
This tour will prove to be both a presentation of the Jewish heritage in the area, and an in depth trip through the lands of Bukovina and Maramures, some of the best preserved traditional regions of Romania and Ukraine. We shall start with Gah Synagogue in Suceava, then we shall see the Great temple of Radauti, once an outstanding Jewish town and, after visiting the Jewish graveyard of Siret, we shall cross Stalin's border into Ukraine, visiting Czernowitz Synagogue which, after being plundered and burnt by German and Romanian soldiers in WW2, was altered and turned into a cinema by the Soviets. After spending the night in town, we shall cross the beautiful, untamed countryside, to the graveyard of Vijnitsa and on to Vorohta, at the foothills of Ukraine's highest mountain, the Hoverla. Crossing River Tisa into Romania, we shall immediately reach Sighetu Marmatiei, where we shall visit the hometown of Elie Wiesel, the man that coined the term of holocaust. We shall spend the night in a traditional guesthouse with a fine local restaurant and the following day we shall visit the shaking Memorial of Sighet. Later on, after visiting Vijniter Klaus Temple of 1885, we shall move on, across picturesque villages, and also crossing Prislop Pass, to Vatra Dornei. The beautiful spa hosts a 1902, Neoclassical temple. On our way to Suceava we shall make one more stop in Campulung Moldovenesc, with its Great Synagogue raised in the interwar period. Evening will find us back in Suceava, with a torrent of memories and an extraordinary experience to talk about.
