Day 1
Suceava - Iasi - Capriana Monastery - Chisinau
Today we shall start in the old medieval capital of Moldavia and go to Iasi, the cultural capital of the region. With a fine old central area, Iasi also hosts the impressive Neogothic Palace of Culture, the beautifully carved stone ornated Trei Ierarhi Church, as well as Golia Monastery. In the early afternoon we shall continue across the border in a land of beautiful countryside. After visiting the 1429, impressive structure of Capriana Monastery, overlooking the nearby extensive forest and the village next to it. We shall spend the night in Chisinau, where we shall have an evening walk along the main avenue.
Day 2
Chisinau - Bender - Noul Neamt Monastery - Tiraspol
Starting in the morning in the Moldovan capital city, we shall soon cross the border into the separatist Transdniestr Republic, dotted with remains of Tighina Fortress, set in the 16th century, which we shall only be able to see from the outside (as it hosts the 14th Russian Army). We shall also visit Noul Neamt Monastery, the Moldovan Republic's largest monastic settlement and in the evening we shall reach Tiraspol with its impressive, if not somewhat surreal monuments.
Day 3
Tiraspol - Chisinau - Cricova Vineyard and Underground Town - Orheiul Vechi - Saharna Monastery
We shall start in the morning back to Chisinau and then we shall visit the Underground Town of Cricova, where wine barrels are hosted in an extensive network of underground halls, with streets and passages connecting them. Possibly the highlight of the whole trip, Orheiul Vechi Monastery will follow, with its impressive natural scenery and fine location, in a few caves overlooking the river. We shall continue to Saharna Monastery in the nature reserve with the same name, where we shall spend the night at the monastery or in traditional guesthouses in the village.
Day 4
Saharna Monastery - Soroca Fortress - Costesti - Botosani - Suceava
After the morning visit to the local monastery seeing the faithful go to prayer, we shall continue to the North and, after a brief stop at the Tear (a monument overlooking the Dniestr), we shall visit the impressive and well preserved 15th century fortress at Soroca, located pretty close to the Dniestr. After the visit, we shall start on the way back to Suceava via Balti and crossing the border at Costesti. After crossing Botosani, where we shall make a brief stop in the still impressive old quarter with its 17th and 18th century merchant houses, we shall each Suceava in the evening.
